Vehicle Manufacturer Requirements
Information is provided on the latest requirements from vehicle manufacturers on what the automotive supply chain are required/ recommended to adopt with respect to automotive quality and environmental management systems.
Quality
The following may be taken as a guide on the position of Auto Manufacturers on ISO/TS 16949:
- DaimlerChrysler: Require registration of suppliers to ISO/TS 16949:2002. Read the DaimlerChrysler Customer-Specific Requirements.
- Ford: Require registration to ISO/TS 16949:2002. Read the Ford Motor Company Customer-Specific Requirements.
- General Motors: Require registration to ISO/TS 16949:2002. Read the GM Customer Specifics.
- PSA Peugeot Citroen: Require registration to ISO/TS 16949:2002.
- Renault: Require registration to ISO/TS 16949:2002.
- Volkswagen: Require registration to ISO/TS 16949:2002.
- BMW : Require compliance only to ISO/TS 16949:2002.
- Fiat : Require registration to ISO/TS 16949:2002.
- Nissan : Require compliance only to ISO/TS 16949:2002.
- Toyota: no current QMS requirements, but will reduce 2nd Party audits for automotive QMS registered suppliers.
- Other Japanese manufacturers: Acknowledge TS, but don't require it as a supplier approval mechanism. They may reduce second party audits if the supplier is ISO/TS 16949:2002 certified.
All this indicates that ISO/TS 16949:2002 is the standard that is used by the automotive industry internationally. Therefore the following actions seem to be appropriate and are being taken by many automotive industry manufacturers:
- Familiarization with ISO/TS 16949:2002.
- Maintain close communication with customers on their position on ISO/TS 16949:2002.
- Conduct a gap analysis on your current system and any considerable changes that may have to be made in order to meet the requirements of ISO/TS 16949:2002.
- At the appropriate time contact BSI for Registration.

Environment
DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Company and General Motors have set requirements for their suppliers to achieve registration to ISO 14001. All three organizations have stated that failure to meet their company's established deadlines may affect future sourcing decisions.
- DaimlerChrysler: requires its North American Tier One production and non-production suppliers to be third-party registered to an environmental management system (EMS) based on ISO 14001.
- Ford Motor Company: ISO 14001 certification is expected of Q1 nonproduction suppliers if the supplier site is a manufacturing site or a nonmanufacturing site with significant environmental impact.
- General Motors: GM requires its tier-one product suppliers - those that directly supply parts for use in the vehicle production - to have an ISO 14001 compliant EMS in place at all manufacturing facilities that supply GM with materials or parts.
