Environmental ISO 14001

EMAS Verification

What is EMAS?

EMAS, the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, is a voluntary EU initiative designed to improve companies' environmental performance.  EMAS is controlled by EU Regulation 761/2042.  A copy of this document can be downloaded from the European Union website

The Scheme is backed by some of the Governments of EU member states. Organizations that participate are recognized as having contributed to environmental degradation.

Verification

If you are located in the EU, BSI can help you toward the registration of your EMAS statement through our verification and validation services.

BSI is independently accredited by UKAS (the UK Accreditation body for EMAS) to deliver EMAS verification and can:

  • verify that your company meets the requirements of the EMAS regulation,
  • validate your environmental statement,
  • assess the environmental management system and internal audit programme whether or not a registration to ISO 14001 is in place.

Verification:

  • ensures that the draft environmental statement that is intended to be made publicly available, is an accurate and fair presentation of your organization's environmental position,
  • applies to any organization with environmental impacts, no matter how large or small and regardless of the activity undertaken,
  • can cover multiple sites within a single member state.

Registration

Once your environmental statement has been verified, you will then be able to register with the EMAS National Competent Body.  This is the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) in the UK.
