BRC Global Standard - Food

BSI provides auditing, certification and training services to the BRC's Global Standard for Food Safety.

Introduction
Developed by the BRC (the British Retail Consortium, a UK trade organization that represents the interests of the UK retailers), the BRC's Global Standard for Food Safety, was created to establish a standard for the supply of food products and to act as key piece of evidence for UK retailers and brand owners to demonstrate ?due diligence? in the face of potential prosecution by the enforcement authorities.

The standard is being adopted by food suppliers throughout the world and especially for those organizations supplying British retailers. Certification to the standard helps manufacturers, brand owners and retailers fulfill their legal obligations whilst ultimately safeguarding the consumer. The standard possesses a comprehensive scope covering all areas of product safety and legality and addresses part of the due diligence requirements of both the supplier and the retailer.

Who is it for?
Particularly suitable for any suppliers, regardless of product or country of origin, that supply food product to the UK retailers. Indeed, many UK retailers recommend that their food product suppliers meet the requirements of the BRC's Global Standard for Food Safety.

Requirements
The principal requirements of the standard are the adoption and implementation of HACCP, a documented and effective quality management system and control of factory environmental standards, products, processes and personnel.

Benefits of adoption
Certifying your food management system against the requirements of the BRC's Global Standard for Food Safety, will bring the following benefits to your organization:

  • Enhances your food safety and food safety management system
  • Shows your commitment to producing safe food
  • Achieves recognition and acceptance from the UK retailer community
  • Increases your customers product safety and quality confidence
  • Reduces the number of supplier audits/assessments

More specific benefits include:

  • The standard is comprehensive in scope covering areas of quality, hygiene and product safety
    throughout the food industry.
  • The standard addresses part of the 'due diligence' requirements of the food manufacturer/supplier, packer/filler and retailer.
  • Provides a single verification commissioned by the manufacturer or supplier, in-line with an agreed evaluation frequency, which allows both manufacturers and suppliers to report upon their status to food retailers as agreed.
  • Allows food manufacturers to use the standard to ensure their suppliers are following good hygiene practices and complete the 'due diligence' chain.
  • Supports continuous improvement through the standard's requirement for ongoing surveillance and corrective actions.
