Greenhouse Gas Emissions Verification

Emissions Trading

Emissions Trading enables the regulation of GHG emissions in a cost-effective way. By converting tonnes of GHG’s into a commodity (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, tCO2e), it is possible for organizations to trade with one another to meet their emissions reduction targets at the lowest possible cost.

This gives the advantage to environmentally friendly companies to recover the cost of investment in low carbon technologies and penalizes those that continue to pollute. There is an incentive for reducing emissions, as they have a monetary value on carbon markets.

The EU established the world’s first mandatory emissions trading scheme. The verification of GHG emissions, by an independent third party, is a core element in ensuring the viability of emissions trading schemes.

BSI is an accredited GHG verifier under many schemes internationally, for more details please see BSI Services.
