Greenhouse Gas Emissions Verification

Joint Implementation

Joint Implementation (JI) projects are commissioned to reduce GHG emissions and are implemented by nations that have ratified the Kyoto Protocol and have emissions reduction targets.

JI projects involve a 'sponsor' and a 'host' nation, and will result in the delivery of "emission reduction units" (ERU), to be used for compliance against Kyoto targets. ERU’s delivered from projects are shared between the host and sponsor country, depending on their level of involvement.

JI projects must be validated before commissioning to ensure that they will deliver the projected environmental benefits and the GHG emissions reduction verified annually. This must be done by an independent third party.

The UNFCCC’s Montreal Summit in 2005 established the JI Supervisory Board to oversee project activities.
